Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney will have plenty on his plate over the next few weeks as he looks to improve his roster ahead of the 2024-25 season. The Bruins' season didn't end how they were hoping, losing in the second round to the Florida Panthers and there are a number of free agents that Sweeney will need to make decisions on. However, it appears that one of those free agents, Derek Forbort, has already made his mind up.
According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Derek Forbort has decided that he will not be returning to the Boston Bruins next season and will test the unrestricted free agent market starting on July 1st.
Forbort, 32, has spent the last three seasons with the Boston Bruins after signing with them as a free agent on the opening day of free agency in 2021. During the 2023-24 campaign, Forbort appeared in 35 games for the Bruins, putting up four assists, 17 penalty minutes and was a plus-eight. He also played two games for their American Hockey League affiliate in Providence, but was held point-less.
There could be a fair amount of interest in Derek Forbort on the free agent market this summer. He plays a good defensive game and while he doesn't bring a 'wow' factor, he always plays hard and would be a solid fit for any team looking for a shutdown defenceman for their third pairing.
