Insider reveals what the Boston Bruins actually offered Jeremy Swayman
An insider has revealed what the Boston Bruins actually offered restricted free agent goaltender Jeremy Swayman.
Jeremy Swayman's situation with the Boston Bruins reached a boiling point on Monday after Cam Neely, the team's President, essentially revealed that they offered the netminder a contract worth a total of $64 million.
"I don't know about him, but I have $64 million reasons why I'd be playing." Neely said.
The comments by Neely caught Swayman and his camp off guard, forcing them to release a statement saying that they will be taking the next few days to evaluate their options moving forward.
""Normally, I do not release statements or discuss negotiations through the media. However, in this case, I feel I need to defend my client. At today's press conference, $64 million was referenced. This was the first time that number was discussed in our negotiations. Prior to the press conference, no offer was made reaching that level. We are extremely disappointed. This was not fair to Jeremy. We will take a few days to discuss where we go from here." Swayman's agent Lewis Gross said.
Flash forward to Tuesday and we have some new reporting from Daily Faceoff on the actual contract Jeremy Swayman was offered by the Boston Bruins.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli said this morning that a source informed him the Boston Bruins offered Jeremy Swayman an eight-year contract worth $62.4 million ($7.8 million AAV).
"[Swayman and Gross] are very disappointed in what Neely said. I think if you look at it from both sides' perspectivesthis really seemed like a tactical error by the Bruins. This felt like a team that was cracking under the weight of probably not having their future No. 1 in net to start the seasonMy understanding is that the Bruins have offered eight years x $7.8 million, which is $62.4 [million]. So, maybe Cam Neely had a bit of fun with numbers$1.6 million is where they were off." Seravalli said.
The next few days are going to be interesting to say the least. As of right now, because the team traded Ullmark to Ottawa back in July and Swayman is still without a contract, all signs point to Joonas Korpisalo getting the start for their first game of the season on October 8th against the Florida Panthers. It's certainly not an ideal situation and the team is hoping that they'll be able to get Swayman under contract relatively soon.
