It likely hasn't been a fun day for the Calgary Flames PR team. It became public earlier Thursday that a recent draft pick is facing some very serious charges.

Topi Ronni, a second round pick (59th overall) of the Calgary Flames, made it known that he has been summoned to appear in court on charges related to an alleged sexual assault.

"Today I have received a summons to appear in court. The last two years or more have been difficult while waiting for the case to proceed. I trust that the course of events will be clarified in the course of the trial. For the time being, I will be away from the team and concentrate on the case".

The team Ronni referred to is Tappara Tampere of the Finnish Elite League (SM-Liiga). He has left them and is not playing hockey or participating in team practices at this time. With all that starting to get talked about in North America, the Calgary Flames decided to release a statement.

"We became aware of a potential legal issue with Topi Ronni following our selection of him in the 2022 NHL draft. We take this matter seriously and will let the legal process follow its due course. We have no further comment at this time."

Ronni is currently 19, meaning the allegations date back to when he was 17. At this time, no date has been set for his trial.
