Son of Notorious Coach Darryl Sutter Announces Retirement From Pro Hockey

Brett Sutter announced that he is retiring from his professional hockey career after 17 seasons. Son of former NHL coach Darryl Sutter. Brett played 60 NHL games during his career and over 1,090 AHL games, which ranks fourth all-time.

Brett Sutter was the captain of the Calgary Wranglers (the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames) for the past two seasons. He will join the team's coaching staff as an assistant.

«Saying goodbye to playing isn't easy. The game has treated my family and I so well for so long, but the opportunity to stay within the organization that my family loves, makes this transition easier,"
Sutter said

The 37 year old, was a sixth round pick of the Flames 179th overall during the 2005 NHL Draft. His father Darryl Sutter was the coach and GM of the Flames at the time, made the pick to select him.

The Sutter family has an ingrained history with the NHL with five brothers playing over 400 NHL Games. Brent, Brian, Ron, Duane, Rich and Darryl all played NHL games. They would go on to have sons fulfilling the next generation of Sutter's into the NHL.

With Brett's retirement only one Sutter remains playing pro hockey. 24 year old, Riley Sutter. Son of Ron, Riley has recently just won back to back Calder Cup trophies with the Hershey Bears.
