In the NHL, players are used to putting all of their bodies on the line to keep the puck out of the net, and most of the time, it can be to their own detriment, resulting in many injuries and concussions over the years. One of those tough players is Brent Burns of the Carolina Hurricanes, and in their ongoing battle with the St. Louis Blues, we saw that brutality on full display.
With the net wide open behind Burns, the veteran blue liner stepped up for his team, but instead of using his body or his legs to block the shot, he ended up leading with his neck.
In the speed of the play, St. Louis' Pavel Buchenevich shot high at the net, and unfortunately he hit Burns right in the neck with the puck, with the Hurricanes eventually shutting the play down. After the brutal play, Burns would leave the game with a head injury, and while he's regarded as one of the toughest players in the NHL, any contact to the head or the neck with the puck is bound to force players out of the game.
Despite fighting back in the game, the Hurricanes would fall on the road to the Blues by a score of 4-3, even after tallying two goals in the third period, but this play from Burns is the type of move that shows a team how much you care and gives them a major boost. We will bring further updates on Burns' condition as the night goes on and they become available, but for now we have another example of a player putting it all on the line for his team in big moments.
