The return of NHL hockey to Quebec City has been an ongoing story for years, and it appears as though the NHL simply refuses to open their mind to the possibility.
30 years ago, the NHL relocated the Quebec Nordiques to Colorado, becoming the Avalanche that we know today, and ever since that point, fans have been clamouring to see the NHL again. Quebec City already has an NHL-ready arena that constantly draws over 9,000 fans for the Quebec Remparts, but for some reason, Gary Bettman and the NHL seemingly aren't interested.
That has now been confirmed by a shocking new piece of information that has been revealed, in which billionaire Luc Poirier, with a net worth of $10B was backing the return of the NHL to Quebec City both as a relocation team from Arizona and as the 32nd expansion team.
»[Luc] Poirier tried to move the Coyotes to Quebec, he was ready to pay the $380 million that Bill Daly and Gary Bettman were looking for at the time, but they didn't want them to move to Quebec, he would have to pay to keep the team [in Arizona]. Same thing with another team, he was ready to spend the $800 million, we don't know who, but somebody came up with a better offer [likely the Seattle Kraken], but it is clear, they don't want to go back to Quebec. I'm sorry, but this is the truth.»
According to Max Truman, Poirier has backed the return to Quebec City and was ready to pay everything the NHL has looked for, something that Bettman recently claimed the city was lacking in their bid for a return. At this point, the league opted to go with Salt Lake City and Seattle in favour of a team that already has the infrastructure and the dedicated fanbase in hockey-mad Quebec, and after turning down Poirier and Quebec City on these two occasions, it's hard to see something happening in the near future.
