Only a few days after Dante Fabbro was surprisingly placed on waivers by the Nashville Predators and claimed by the Columbus Blue Jackets, the insider Elliotte Friedman confirmed that another player is set to enter the NHL waiver wire today.
Indeed, he revealed that the Chicago Blackhawks will place Andreas Athanasiou on waivers on Monday afternoon.
Drafted 110th overall in 2012 by the Detroit Red Wings, Athanasiou played 492 games in the NHL for the Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks.
The 6'2" forward scored 245 points, including 127 goals. He had the best season of his career in 2018-19, scoring 30 goals and 24 assists in Detroit.
This season has been much more challenging for Athanasiou. He was limited to only five games with the Blackhawks this year, with his last game on October 22nd.
If Athanasiou truly ends up on waivers, it'll be interesting to see if he gets claimed. The player played three seasons in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins between 2013 and 2016.
With a year left on his $4,250,000 AAV contract, most NHL teams won't be able to claim him. Nearly all teams have no cap space to grab the player and his contract, but we could see a team like the Columbus Blue Jackets make another waiver acquisition.
On Monday afternoon, we should get a confirmation from the Chicago Blackhawks, and 24 hours later, we'll know his next destination.
Stay tuned as we look forward to bringing you the latest updates on all NHL waiver activities.
