The Colorado Avalanche organization have added a female coach to their staff for the 2024-25 season.

After becoming the first-ever female coach in NCAA Division III history last season, the Colorado Avalanche organization are brining in Kim Weiss as a video coach for their American Hockey League affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, the team said in a statement on their website.

"We're excited to add Matt and Kim to the Eagles coaching staff," said Avalanche Assistant General Manager and Eagles General Manager Kevin McDonald. «Both individuals bring strong coaching and playing backgrounds and will be valuable additions to Head Coach Aaron Schneekloth's staff."

Weiss, 35, turned her attention to coaching a decade after her playing career came to an end following her final year at Trinity College in 2010-11. Weiss spent two seasons in the NAHL as an assistant coach, then an associate head coach, with the Maryland Black Bears.

Ahead of the 2023-24 season, Weiss was named an assistant coach for her alma matter, Trinity College, a Division III school in the NCAA. In doing so, she became the first woman to ever coach at that level.

It'll be interesting to see if in a few years, Weiss will be able to follow in the footsteps of Jessica Campbell, who started out in the AHL with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, before being promoted by the Seattle Kraken this summer and becoming the first female bench coach in NHL history.
