Oliver Kylington says his parents are no longer in the picture and he is focusing solely on hockey after signing a new contract with the NHL's Colorado Avalanche

Last year marked a new start for Oliver Kylington. After taking almost a season and a half away from hockey entirely to deal with his mental health, Kylington returned midway through 2023-24 and ended the year with the Calgary Flames, making him an unrestricted free agent. He now has a new one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche.

Nothing much has ever been said about Kylington's time away from the game. in February of 2023, then Flames GM Brad Treliving said he was keeping in touch with Oliver Kylington on regular basis, and asked for privacy as Kylington dealt with a family matter. In a new interview in his home country of Sweden, Kylington said he's since broken off his relationship with his parents, adding his focus is on hockey and minimizing distractions.

"No relationship. And that's fine. I feel good about it. As I said, I just want to play hockey and do my thing. And be in the present as much as I can. I don't need any more distractions in my life."

Kylington has spoken openly about his mental health issues in the past. It looks as though the solution to at least some of the problems were to cut his parents out of his life.

" Still grateful for things that have happened although it has been very difficult. I am grateful for what it has done to me and the insights it has brought. Then you cannot always influence what has happened considering that you do not choose your parents. But that's okay. It is what it is. That's life."

Kylington was born in Sweden to a Swedish father, and a mother from the South African country of Eritrea. Outside of that, little about his parents is known. It's always unfortunate when you have to cut anyone out of your life, especially family, but if that's what it takes to heal, it's hard to fault Kylington for that.
