The Dallas Stars are one of the most loaded teams in the entire NHL this season, and now, it appears as though they are using a popular loophole to get even better.
Recently, the team announced that Tyler Seguin would undergo hip surgery that would leave him out between four and six months, with the expectation that he returns for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
With one of the most talented teams in the league, in the short-term this could be a major blow for Dallas, but on a positive note, it may lead to a massive move or two for the team.
Now, Elliotte Friedman has confirmed the obvious, revealing that the Stars are going to use LTIR to free up cap space in Seguin's absence as they look to make a major addition to make this team better ahead of what many believe could be a Stanley Cup winning campaign.
In 2024/25, Seguin has a cap hit around $9.85 million, meaning that the Stars could likely make several additions with that space, and ultimately, it could be the difference between being a good team and being a great team this season.
In 19 games played for Dallas this year before the injury, Seguin looked back to his best with 9 goals and 20 points, and if he can come back anywhere close to 100% for the post-season, this is a Stars team that could be a force.
Ultimately though, this LTIR rule is one that frustrates fans, but until the NHL remove it in their next CBA, this is going to keep on happening, with the Stars looking to emulate the likes of Vegas and Tampa Bay who have used the rule to great Stanley Cup success in recent years.
