Dallas Stars to buyout contract of veteran defenceman Ryan Suter
Ryan Suter's time in the Lone Star State is coming to a close and he'll hit the open market in a matter of days.
According to Sportsnet's Jeff Marek, the Dallas Stars are buying out the final year of Ryan Suter's contract and he'll become an unrestricted free agent once the move is completed.
Marek said that the Dallas Stars will save $1.4 million against the cap next season, but Suter's contract will have a hit of $1.4 million for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 campaigns.
"The Dallas Stars are buying out the remainder of Ryan Suter's contract.
With one year remaining on Suter's deal this move will add $1.4 million on the Stars cap for the next two seasons.
The Stars will save $1.4 million with the buyout." Marek said.
Suter, 39, becomes the second player to have his contract bought out twice in the NHL, joining defenceman Tony DeAngelo. The Madison, Wisconsin native will now be paid by three different teams next season, if he finds a new contract in the NHL - his new team, the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild, who owe him $7,371,794 next season and $833,333 for the four years afterwards due to a buyout in 2021.
In 82 games for the Stars this season, Suter had 17 points (two goals, 15 assists), 28 penalty minutes and was a plus-14. He went on to add four points (one goal, three assists) in 19 playoff games, helping the Stars reach the Western Conference Final.
It'll be interesting to see what the future holds for Ryan Suter in 2024-25 and whether or not he'll find an NHL contract right away once the market opens or if he'll have to wait for the dust to settle. It wouldn't be a shock if he has to sign a professional tryout contract (PTO) to prove himself in training camp before getting a guaranteed deal.
