This is, perhaps, the put-up or shut-up deal for Joe Veleno. The Detroit Red Wings first round pick (30th overall) in 2018 has been given a new deal, but nothing long-term.
The Red Wings, who are attempting to get into position to make the playoffs, gave Veleno a one-year deal worth $825,000.
That amount is a bit less than what Veleno has been making the past three years. The 23-year-old forward played his first full season in the NHL in 2022-23, scoring 9 goals and 20 points in 81 games. If a step forward isn't taken next season, look for Detroit to cut ties with the pending restricted free agent.
