The sport of hockey has long been renowned for fighting, but when players are choking each other out on the ice, it's becoming a major problem, and that's exactly what happened in a recent AHL matchup.

There's been plenty of drama, suspensions and controversial non-suspensions in the NHL as of late, but that hasn't been stayed purely in the top level of North American Hockey, with the AHL also now getting involved.

During a recent game with the Iowa Wild, Grand Rapids Griffins forward William Lagesson was caught using a highly illegal move on the ice during a scuffle with Adam Raska, forcing him to tap out after he choked him on the ice.

Unsurprisingly, the video on social media drew plenty of backlash, as this is the type of act that simply isn't necessary in hockey, and is one of the things that make the game look bad for absolutely no reason, with fans noting just how gross this type of play is when there's plenty of ways to get under your opponents skin without doing this.

Thankfully, the AHL saw sense after seeing this utterly ridiculous video, as they announced a three-game suspension for the 28-year old forward, even though many fans believe that it should have been much longer.

While that might be a light punishment, it's safe to say that it's not the only one Lagesson will have to deal with, as the Griffins and the Wild play five more times this season, with the defenseman likely to pay at least once throughout that time.

The 28-year old joined the Detroit Red Wings organization this season as a free agent with 100 NHL games (0 goals, 11 assists) under his belt, but after seeing this footage, there's a great chance that he struggles to get another game at the top level anytime soon.
