After one of the greatest playoff performances in National Hockey League history, Connor McDavid was named this year's recipient of the Conn Smythe Trophy as Stanley Cup Playoff MVP.
Given that Edmonton lost, McDavid became the sixth player in NHL history to win the Conn Smythe Trophy while on the losing team, the last time this happened was 2003 - Jean-Sebastien Giguere of the Anaheim Ducks.
After the game when National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman came out to announce this year's winner, Connor McDavid decided that he didn't want to leave the dressing room and come out onto the ice. It's completely understandable as to why he didn't want to, he's probably very emotional right now and the last thing he feels like doing is coming back onto the ice to accept a trophy after losing in his first chance to take home the Stanley Cup.
It was a difficult night for the Edmonton Oilers as they could only find the back of the net once with Sergei Bobrovsky standing on his head and playing like he did in Games 1 through 3.
With Edmonton's loss on Monday night, Canada's Stanley Cup drought is now extended for another year and will hit 32 years in 2025. It's bound to end at some point, as all seven of Canada's teams continue to improve year after year.
The 2023-24 NHL season is now officially over, but the off-ice action won't be ending for a little while. Tomorrow, the 2024 Hall of Fame class will be announced and later in the week we have the NHL Entry Draft, followed by free agency on Monday.
