The LA Kings could be without one of their best players for an extended period of time following Wednesday's preseason contest against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Kings defenceman Drew Doughty got tangled up with former teammate and current Golden Knights player Tanner Pearson. The incident occurred midway through the first period when Doughty went to finish a check on Pearson near the King's blue line. Doughty's leg got tied up with Pearson and he was unable to put pressure on it as he was helped off the ice. Doughty left the game and didn't return.

Kings head coach Jim Hiller spoke after the team's 3-2 victory saying he didnt have an update on the former Norris trophy winning defenceman. The Kings medical team will have a further evaluation when they get back home to LA.

Fans took to social media after the game to speculate on what the injury was that Doughty suffered.

Here are some of the reactions:

"Definitely broken, just awful.»

"A lot of fans that had their favorite teams play him in playoffs don't like him. Not this Oiler fan, the guy is a warrior, and I hope he has a speedy recovery."

"Old father age catching up to Drew not as fast, result is chasing rushed decision, price is injury. That is Reality folks!"

"Man that's honestly heartbreaking Drew is one the classiest dudes in the nhl from all I hear we are all routing for ya big guy" .
"Man that stinks. Preseason they gotta get ready but this is always the fear. Such a good pro, good luck to him hopefully nothing major."

Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli provided an update on Doughty, revealing that Doughty sustained a left ankle injury. The initial x-ray showed a fracture, but he's scheduled for additional imaging today.

The 34 year old, appeared in all 82 games for the Kings last season scoring 15 goals and 50 points while averaging 25:47 in ice time. The former 2nd overall pick from the 2008 NHL Draft has spent his entire career with the Kings as he embarks on his 17th NHL season.
