The Edmonton Oilers shocked the league earlier this season when they placed veteran defenseman Travis Dermott on waivers in December.
Dermott has over 300 games of NHL experience and has proven himself to be a capable defensive defenseman.
He got into just ten games with the Oilers this season and averaged just 13 minutes of ice time per game, recording zero points and collecting a -3 rating in that span.
There is nothing flashy about his game and the Oilers have been a team that lacked depth on the blueline, so the move did seemingly come out of nowhere.
Perhaps the organization regretted the move after he was claimed by the Minnesota Wild, but now they will have their chance to get him back.
This is because Bill Guerin of the Wild placed Dermott on waivers himself today, after he got into just 9 games with the team.
Surprisingly, Dermott's ice time dropped even more when he joined the Wild, averaging just over 11 minutes per game in his 9-game stint with the club.
He had zero points, a net zero rating, and 5 shots on goal in those games.
Dermott has 16 career goals and 62 points in 348 career regular-season games.
Stan Bowman and the Oilers could swoop in and add him back to their club, but they would have to play him in the NHL, so the question remains as to whether or not they think he is better than their current 3rd pair lefty of Brett Kulak.
Kulak has 6 goals and 19 points and a +1 rating in 57 games this season.
It is clear that the coaching staff trusts him more as well as he averages just under 20 minutes of ice time per game.
If the Oilers don't make a claim for Dermott, another team may very well add the former 2nd round pick to their roster, so keep an eye out for more waiver news in the next 24 hours.
