Patrick Kane reveals details of injury that limited him throughout his entire time as a New York Ranger
The New York Rangers had their season end in a Game 7 loss against the New Jersey Devils. The Rangers stars couldn't generate enough offence in the series to push them into the second round. Mika Zibanejad had 4 points, Vladimir Tarasenko had 4 points and Artemi Panarin had a surprisingly low 2 points in the series.
Now comes the off-season questions as management sorts out a team that fell way short of expectations.
Patrick Kane met with the media for the first time since the loss to reveal that that he was not 100 percent healthy and was dealing with a lower-body injury. Kane said he hopes to know within the next week or so whether he'll require surgery this offseason.
A report by The Athletic's Arthur Staple in February said that it «seems like the whole league knows now that Kane needs hip surgery.» Kane didn't miss any time while with the Rangers.
Kane credited the training staff of the Rangers
"I commend the training staff and [head athletic trainer] Jim Ramsay for getting me where I felt as good as I possibly could so when the game started I could just think about hockey and playing,» Kane said, «But before, it's just a lot of maintenance and thinking about how you're going to get yourself to feel the best as possible to play."
The 34 year old had more time ponder things and admitted:
"We're going to have to find a way to get me back to as close to 100 percent as possible because I look back at that series and I know if I felt a little better I can help us win it,» Kane said on Wednesday's breakup day at the training facility, «So it's almost disappointing and depressing in a way but that's kind of how I feel about it.»
"I mean, you just look at certain situations and you're like, if we're down a goal here or there, you could take over in and help the team get out of a little rut. That's where I think I could have helped a little bit more but it was a seven-game series.»
Kane seems open to returning to New York.
"Of course I would love to be back, with this team and this opportunity. I would love that chance,» Kane said, «I know they have young guys to sign and probably other priorities but like I said, I don't have a bad thing to say about the organization and the situation."
"I thought it was an amazing experience for me. I'm turning 35 next year but it's not like I feel old. I still feel pretty young. I feel like the passion is still there and I know I can be a top player if my focus is solely on hockey instead of how I feel.»
There will be many questions for General Manager Chris Drury to ponder this off-season with rumors already beginning to rumble on the job security of Head Coach Gerard Gallant. If Kane truly wants to remain in the Big Apple and comes back 100%, something can definitely get worked out.
