Hockey Canada names roster for 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship

Hockey Canada has announced their 20-man roster that will look to bring home a medal for the fourth straight tournament at the 2023 IIHF World Hockey Championship.

Canada's roster doesn't contain many big names, as is the case every year with the World Championship because top players are either still in the Stanley Cup Playoffs or opt not to play due to injury or to rest for the upcoming season. But among those on the roster is projected second overall pick in June's Entry Draft, Adam Fantilli.

Interestingly enough though, Canada has a few open spots on their roster, so it's definitely possible they are awaiting confirmation from other players.

Let's take a look at the 20 players that will be wearing the maple leaf beginning next Friday.

- Tyler Toffoli (Calgary - NHL)
- Sammy Blais (St. Louis - NHL)
- Joe Veleno (Detroit - NHL)
- Adam Fantilli (University of Michigan - NCAA)

Defencemen (6)
- Pierre-Olivier Joseph (Pittsburgh - NHL)
- Justin Barron (Montreal - NHL)
- MacKenzie Weegar (Calgary - NHL)
- Tyler Myers (Vancouver - NHL)
- Ethan Bear (Vancouver - NHL)

Canada will be in Group B for the tournament, which will be played in Riga. In the preliminary round, Canada will face Latvia (May 12th), Slovenia (May 14th), Slovakia (May 15th), Kazakhstan (May 17th), Switzerland (May 20th), Norway (May 22nd) and Czechia (May 23rd).
