Rangers Poised To Land 100-Point Superstar Forward In Offseason, Per Elliotte Friedman
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has dropped a bombshell comment when he stated that the Rangers have a good shot at signing Mikko Rantanen in free agency.
NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman reports that the New York Rangers would be willing to "move mountains" to obtain Mikko Rantanen in free agency in the event that the Carolina Hurricanes fail to lock up his services.
As the trading season approaches its March 7th deadline, teams are making their decisions regarding impending unrestricted free agents, such as the Rangers.
In a failure to re-sign Rantanen, the Hurricanes would shop around to trade him up until the trade deadline. In the event that he reaches July 1st, though, he's open to every team.
Rantanen's contract is expected to push $14 million AAV
Rantanen is going to get a monster contract, one that is possibly up to $14 million AAV. The rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks, each of whom have a glut of cap space, have been discussed in his services.
«Teams will make room for this guy. If they have a feeling that he's going to come to them, the NY Rangers, Toronto, it won't just be the teams with a lot of cap room. It'll be teams (saying) like, 'OK if I have to move a mountain to get Mikko Rantanen we're going to try to do it.»
The New York team has been active this season, starting with trading captain Jacob Trouba to Anaheim, and next adding J.T. Miller in a move that sent Filip Chytil to Vancouver.
With their willingness to make aggressive plays, it's likely that they continue to rebuild their lineup to fit in Rantanen. In the end, it's up to GM Chris Drury to get it done.
