New York Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko has been linked to trade rumours for quite a while now, but as of today - July 21st, nothing has materialized and he remains in 'The Big Apple'.
Heading into the summer, Kakko was set to become a restricted free agent, but the Rangers and his camp were able to work out a contract for the 2024-25 season that'll see him earn $2.4 million USD.
Despite signing a contract with the Rangers, trade rumours regarding Kakko never seemed to die down and began to heat up even more heading into the NHL Entry Draft. At one point, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that Kakko and the Rangers would part ways via trade, but it appears that the offers General Manager Chris Drury was getting wasn't good enough.
According to Vince Mercogliano of USA TODAY, a source told him that the Rangers haven't been thrilled with the offers that they received for the Finnish forward in the week leading up to the NHL Entry Draft and as of now, they'll be holding onto Kakko unless another team comes to the table with a fair value offer.
The Rangers are hoping that Kaapo Kakko can turn the corner next season and become the player they were expecting him to be when they selected him second overall back in 2019. Since entering the NHL, the Turku, Finland native has 117 points in 300 regular season games and nine points in 44 contests during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
