The Ottawa Senators will be moving on from a veteran defenceman this week after parts of three seasons with the organization.

In a post on the Ottawa Citizen, Senators reporter Bruce Garrioch reported that the team will be buying out the remaining year of Travis Hamonic's contract this week.

The move will be made official on Wednesday when the buyout window opens and will cost the Senators a cap hit $366,000 for the next two seasons. Hamonic will then become an unrestricted free agent and be eligible to sign with any of the 31 other teams in the NHL.

"Veteran Travis Hamonic has a full no-move clause and will likely have his $1 million deal bought out once the Stanley Cup final ends Monday night. The club will carry a $366,000 cap hit for the next two seasons." Garrioch said.

Hamonic, 33, joined the Ottawa Senators in March 2022 after being traded by the Vancouver Canucks for a third round pick. This past season, the St. Malo, Manitoba native had the lowest single-season point total of his career, but missed time with both upper and lower-body injuries.

In 48 games for the Senators this season, Hamonic had six points (two goals, four assists), 40 penalty minutes and was a plus-ten.

Senators General Manager Steve Staios has plenty of work to do this summer to transform the team's roster into one that can contend for a playoff spot next season. The Senators are believed to be in the market for goaltending help and appear to be targeting Boston's Linus Ullmark. If the Senators are able to land him, that would be a great start for Staios, but more work lies ahead.
