Earlier today the Philadelphia Flyers placed Ryan Johansen on waivers for what the team described as a 'material breach' of contract. The decision came after the Johansen didn't report to the team after he was acquired in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche. Johansen claimed his failure to report was due to an injury, but the Flyers disagreed.
At the time many felt that Johansen was simply trying to avoid a reunion with former Head Coach John Tortorella, who he had clashed with previously. Today, the Flyers decision displays that the team felt this injury was simple an attempt to avoid playing while collecting his full pay. According to reports, Johansen didn't 'find' the injury until he was dealt to Philadelphia.
Chris Johnston is now reporting that Johansen has 60 days to file a grievance against the Flyers, something many players have done in the past. The most likely outcome is the two parties reach an agreement that will see Johansen compensated by the Flyers and his deal terminated.
Given the precedent in the NHL, this situation will not likely be resolved in a timely manner. Regardless of this situation, Johansen will become an unrestricted free agent as of noon tomorrow, unless he is claimed on waivers, something which isn't expected to occur. If he becomes a free agent, Johansen is expected to have at least a few teams interested in his services.
