The Pittsburgh Penguins pulled off a trade today acquiring University of Michigan forward and Winnipeg Jets prospect Rutger McGroarty.

After months of speculation and a report that Winnipeg Jets draft pick Rutger McGroarty was unhappy with the direction the Jets were going in and his overall treatment by the organization, it appears he is heading to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Moose Jaw Warriors centre Brayden Yager. Yager was drafted in the first round 14th overall by the Penguins during the 2023 draft.

McGroarty has played the last two seasons at the University of Michigan accumulating 34 goals along with 57 assists.

Yager, 19, has played his entire WHL career with the Warriors. In 211 games across four seasons, he's accumulated 104 goals to go along with 146 for 250 points.

It has been reported that McGroarty will sign his entry-level contract after the trade is completed. He is likely to step into a Penguins lineup that isn't necessarily rebuilding but could use some energy upfront. Having an opportunity to be mentored by the likes of Sidney Crosby and Geno Malkin could be exactly what the young forward needs as he begins his NHL career.
