Earlier this week news surfaced that Sidney Crosby was expected to sign a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in his birthday. Unfortunately for Penguins' fans that day came and went without a contract extension. Instead the team simply posted a birthday wish to their captain on social media.
Over the summer multiple reports have linked Crosby back to the Penguins, with many reports stating that the deal would be 3-years in nature taking Crosby beyond the age of 40. Other reports indicated the deal would come in around $10,000,000 per season, marking the largest contract of Crosby's career. Today, Rob Rossi of The Athletic provided an update on the talks and while their appears to be no hesitance to re-sign, it appears Crosby is unsure of how long he wants to play.
Unlike in the past Crosby is in a unique contract situation. As a player over the age of 35, Crosby's deal would be fully guaranteed and would count against the salary cap even if he retired. As a career Penguin, Crosby would hate to put his team in a negative position.
For the first time in years, it now appears that despite having incredibly productive year last year, one of the greatest players of our time is finally considering that the end is near. Crosby will certainly go down as a Hall of famer as soon as he hangs up the skates and without question, will we give considered one of the greatest Pittsburgh Penguins of all time.
