Sidney Crosby reportedly unsure if he wants to re-sign with Penguins
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is reportedly unsure if he wants to re-sign with the organization.
It's been over two months since Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby became eligible to sign a contract extension with the organization and as of September 6th, he hasn't put pen-to-paper, which is getting some people a little bit worried.
On Friday's edition of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman shared that the Pittsburgh Penguins have made multiple offers to Sidney Crosby since he became eligible to sign an extension.
Friedman wonders if Crosby is thinking about if he can handle not making the playoffs again, if he is to re-sign with the organization. If Crosby does feel that way, it could force him into looking elsewhere next summer as free agent. Friedman added that he predicts that Crosby will remain with the Penguins and that he wants to be in Pittsburgh and when asked in recent weeks why an extension hasn't been done yet, the Sportsnet insider was told that there's no rush because it's the summer.
"One thing I wonder is if Crosby is simply sitting here saying 'I've got no problem with the offers, I've got no problem with the Penguins, but if we're not going to be making the playoffs, am I going to be able to handle that?' I think that's one of the things he'd kind of weighing." Friedman said.
He added, "My prediction is he stays because I think he's a Penguin and he wants to be a Penguin, but I've tried to ask around about why it isn't done, and I think one of the reasons is it's the summer and he doesn't need to rush. He's still got time. And I think the other one is what if it's like that? Is [he] going to be able to deal with it, because he's still at the top of his game and he's competitive."
Friedman elaborated that Dubas had made Crosby multiple offers and still Crosby had not signed. It's hard to envision Sidney Crosby leaving the Pittsburgh Penguins, but if he does, there won't be a shortage of teams interested in his services. Two that stick out are the Colorado Avalanche, to play with his buddy Nathan MacKinnon and the Montreal Canadiens, who were his favourite team growing up.
With training camps getting underway in less than two weeks, it'll be interesting if talks escalate between the two sides and if a deal can be in place before Pittsburgh's first game of the 2024-25 season on October 9th against the New York Rangers.
