The Penguins took down the Red Wings 6-3 yesterday and Sidney Crosby was among the team's top performers, as he recorded his first two assists of the season. Erik Karlsson scored a powerplay goal and Evgeni Malkin recorded his 800th career helper. What made this more impressive for the team is the fact that this was the Red Wings home opener. Oddly though, the game was actually delayed as the League made a schedule adjustment to accommodate the Detroit Tigers playoff game.
With that being said, another story from the game has begun to make headlines online. This one does not come from the results on the ice. Instead, it revolves around the experience of one fan who wanted to get Crosby's autograph. This fan was clearly a mega fan of Crosby as he was trying to get a jersey signed. Not a Penguins jersey, but rather a Rimouski Oceanic jersey, the team Crosby played for in the QMJHL before being drafted.
Apparently, the fan was dangling the jersey above the tunnel where the visiting players enter and exit the bench. This is a common practice around the league as fans try to get items autographed after games end. In this case though, a Red Wings security officer took the jersey from the fan and threw it back to them, asking them not to dangle it anymore. Somehow though, the Penguins captain became aware of this and was able to track the fan down to sign their jersey for them.
This is the kind of wholesome story that will contribute to Crosby's legacy both on and off the ice. He has already had a legendary career and easily could have called it quits by now, but clearly he remains dedicated to the Penguins and their fans. Hopefully, he will continue to lead the team to victories throughout the season. After all, Crosby can get into trouble at times out of frustration when things are not going his way. If last night's game was any indication though, the Penguins could be in for a bounce back season.
