After numerous chances with different clubs, former 4th overall selection Jesse Puljujarvi has failed to secure a regular spot in the NHL, which is quite surprising considering how high he was selected at the draft.
The Pittsburgh Penguins waived Jesse Puljujarvi on Monday after scoring three goals and five assists in 21 games this season, which counts for eight total points. He's also recorded eight penalty minutes on his stat sheet while having a -2 plus-minus rating.
Puljujarvi was selected 4th overall in 2016 by the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers picked him before familiar talents such as Matthew Tkachuk, Clayton Keller, and Charlie McAvoy.
He hasn't played a full NHL season thus far. He has played for Edmonton, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Penguins, but has lost his place in every lineup.
His best season came in 2021-22 in which he scored 14 goals and 22 assists for 36 points in 65 games for the Oilers.
As reported by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, Puljujarvi wasn't claimed by one of the 31 other teams in the NHL, which means he has officially cleared waivers. He will most likely report to Pittsburgh's farm club in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
It remains to be seen whether Puljujarvi will ever get another shot in the NHL again, but after numerous disappointing performances with several teams over the last few years, he could very well remain in the AHL for quite some time.
