Contrasting match-ups are always engaging, whether it be an NHL original franchise against a modern team or a low-powered team against a high-powered squad.
The following match-up today of the Montreal Canadiens versus the Vegas Golden Knights fits that description perfectly.
Whereas the Canadiens are one of the older teams in the league, also dating back to 1909, mostly before any of today's fans were born, they are the most decorated franchise in the NHL with 24 Stanley Cup championships.
The last time they hoisted the Cup was 1993, which coincidentally was also the last time any Canadian team won it all. Those aren't today, with them sitting at the bottom of the standings.
On the flip side of that coin, the Golden Knights are one of the newer teams in the NHL since they started playing in 2017.
Within that time, they have made a few playoff appearances, a couple of trips to the Stanley Cup Final, and even won a championship in 2023. For a «new kid on the block,» their track record is exceptional.
Vegas, though two points shy of Winnipeg for tops in the league, continue their strong climb. They keep looking at roster improvement by upgrading their bottom-six wingers.
One potential trade target for Vegas is Canadiens forward Jake Evans, who has 10 goals, and 13 assists this season. A speedy, penalty-killing center, Jake Evans could help deepen Vegas.
His scoring numbers don't jump off the page, but he's physical, with 47 hits this season, and strong in transition play.
According to Dave Jenkins of NHLTradeRumor.com, Vegas could offer prospect Matyas Sapovaliv along with draft picks for Evans.
This would be a good return for Montreal in terms of a rental and an important piece for Vegas as they make their push for the playoffs.
