Training camps for teams around the Ontario Hockey League get underway in a matter of weeks, with pre-season games beginning on August 30th, and we already have a significant trade that's occurred involving a Seattle Kraken prospect.
In a post on social media on Tuesday afternoon, the Brampton Steelheads announced that they've acquired Seattle Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf for 10 draft picks - three 2nds (2025, 2026, 2027); three 3rds (2025 x2, 2028); three 4ths (2025, 2026, 2027); and a 2026 seventh round pick.
Rehkopf, 19, appeared in 60 games for Kitchener last season where he put up 95 points (52 goals, 43 assists). He went on to add 11 points in ten playoff games. The Barrie, Ontario native also represented Canada at the 2024 World Juniors.
At first glance, it's a big confusing as to why the Kitchener Rangers would part with Carson Rehkopf after scoring over 50 goals last season, but the team is set to be in a bit of a transitional year in 2024-25. Eduard Sale and Filip Mesar are likely set to join their respective NHL organizations in Seattle and Montreal, playing for their American Hockey League affiliates. Overagers Matthew Sop, Mitchell Martin and Roman Schmidt are all gone. Meanwhile, Calgary Flames prospect Hunter Brzustewicz may also make the jump to professional hockey next season, although that one's a bit more uncertain at this time.
As for the Brampton Steelheads, who relocated from Mississauga, they're going to be a team to watch in the OHL's Eastern Conference and could finish the regular season as the number one seed. Brampton's roster features a pair of 2025 draft eligible prospects in Porter Martone and Jack Ivankovic, along with Angus MacDonell, Luke Misa, Jakub Fibigr, Ryerson Leenders, Finn Harding and now, Carson Rehkopf.
Brampton's division, the Central, is going to be loaded with talent next season and will be interesting to keep an eye on throughout the year. The Barrie Colts will be led by a pair of 2024 first round picks - Emil Hemming and Cole Beaudoin, along with Canucks prospect Riley Patterson, Beau Jelsma and projected 2025 first rounder Kashawn Aitcheson. Sudbury will have a loaded offensive group featuring Dalibor Dvorsky, Quentin Musty and Nathan Villeneuve.
North Bay might be a team in transition next season after making it to the Eastern Conference Final in the spring. The most notable name likely returning for them next season is Vancouver Canucks prospect Anthony Romani, who led the league in goals last season with 58. It's unclear if Ty Nelson will make the jump and play professionally in Seattle's system next season or if he'll play his overage year in the OHL.
The final team in the Central Division is the Niagara IceDogs, who haven't made the playoffs since 2019 and have finished last in the division in each of the last three years. Kevin He, who was selected in the fourth round by Winnipeg and Ryan Roobroeck, a projected top-15 pick in 2026, will be two names to keep an eye on in Niagara this season.
