The Toronto Maple Leafs turned over a new leaf this week by announcing that John Tavares has passed on the captaincy of the team to Auston Matthews.

This officially marks Matthews as the face of the franchise now and in the future.

Tavares who has one year left on his contract isn't due for an extension, but insider James Mirtle believes that John Tavares willingly gave up the C on one condition.

Tavares who has been a member of the Maple Leafs since the 2018-2019 season. He was named captain of the franchise on October 2, 2019, and has done everything right since the moment he became a Maple Leaf. At times he can sound a bit robotic and not nearly as emotional as fans believe he should be, but everyone fails to realize that leaders lead in different ways and Tavares was given the captaincy at the time because of the qualities he possesses, on top of the type of player he is. This translated into the captain he was for the Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and John Tavares were a match made in heaven when he signed in the summer of 2018, and they continue to be today. You will never find another individual who wanted to be a Maple Leaf like Tavares. Many players who are from the Greater Toronto Area have steered clear from wearing the Blue and White for one reason or another. Tavares went about his business quietly at times and many people didn't think he was the most appropriate person to wear the C, but he led with grace. Being part of the Maple Leafs franchise isn't easy and being a captain is even more difficult, but he took everything that was thrown at him over the last five years in stride. Tavares will likely remain a Maple Leaf for the remainder of his career after signing an extension that will likely be a team-friendly short-term deal. He will continue to build on the legacy he has already forged over the 440 games in the Blue and White.
