Toronto Maple Leafs RFA forward Nick Robertson is still unsigned as training camp looms in only a couple of weeks. There appears to be an opportunity for the 22 year old winger to have a large role with the franchise if he chooses to capture the moment. Even with the chance at a larger role, it appears like Robertson still has his mind made up on leaving Toronto.
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun spoke on the Robertson situation with Toronto when he appeared on TSN's OverDrive segment.
Robertson put up career numbers last season, scoring 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games but wasn't fully able to earn the trust of his coach, averaging just 11:22 in ice time.
The former 2nd round pick from the 2019 NHL Entry Draft has had a rocky start to his NHL career with just 87 games played in parts of 4 seasons. Robertson has dealt with a myriad of injuries but even when inserted in the lineup, he never made the most of his opportunities.
It will be interesting to see the how this Maple Leafs and Robertson saga plays out. The California native doesn't have a ton of leverage in the situation but could hold out and not play. This could do some harm, with Toronto having young players in the pipeline like Easton Cowan who could pass Robertson on the depth chart permanently if given the opportunity.
