According to Steve Simmons, the Toronto Maple Leafs have informed other teams around the National Hockey League that they are open to moving Mitch Marner and that he won't be asked to waive his no-movement clause until they get an offer they like.
Trading Mitch Marner, if that does happen this summer, will be a big moment for the Maple Leafs organization and it won't be easy to get done. For starters, Marner has a full no-movement clause which means he controls where he wants to go and where he won't go.
Secondly, Marner has a very high cap hit of $10.9 million for the 2024-25 season before he becomes an unrestricted free agent next year, unless signed to an extension prior to July 1st, 2025.
Marner has had his struggles, especially in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but he's still one of the brightest stars in the National Hockey League. When considering that they'll move him, Brad Treliving and the Maple Leafs brass have likely set a high price, which will also make things difficult if teams aren't willing to pay up.
The 27-year-old had 85 points (26 goals, 59 assists), 18 penalty minutes and was a plus-21 in 69 games during the regular season. He followed that up with one goal and two assists in seven Stanley Cup Playoff games.
As we head towards the NHL Entry Draft and the opening of free agency, trade talks are expected to heat up, as they do every year, and everyone will have their eyes on the Toronto Maple Leafs to see if they ultimately trade Mitch Marner.
