John Tavares' season not over, agrees to join another team
Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares saw his NHL season come to an end last Saturday with a Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins.
The loss isn't sitting well with the Maple Leafs after another unsuccessful playoff and with that, a few of their players wanted to end their season on a positive note by playing for their country at the World Championship.
For John Tavares, he's reportedly agreed to play for Canada at the tournament, which is set to get underway today in Prague and Ostrava, Czechia. TSN's Darren Dreger first reported the news on Friday morning.
"Another huge add for Team Canada at the Men's World Hockey Championship. Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has agreed to represent his country and will join the team today." Dreger said in a post on X.
Tavares, 33, has a ton of experience on the international stage and this will be his first tournament for Canada since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, where he had four points in six games.
He's also appeared at three World Championship for Canada, the last one coming in 2012 and played at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, bringing home a gold medal.
There's no question that Tavares will be an important piece for this young roster and will be apart of the leadership group for the tournament, as Canada is looking to win back-to-back gold medals.
Tavares and Canada will open up their World Championship schedule on Saturday morning at 6:20 a.m. ET on TSN.
