After another early exit from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, this time at the hands of their Original Six rivals, the Boston Bruins, the Maple Leafs are unlikely to go into the 2024-25 campaign with the same core they had.
It's going to be difficult to move any members of their core due to salary reasons and while fans have different feeling on who should move and who shouldn't, one name that can be crossed off the list is Auston Matthews. If anyone on the Maple Leafs' roster is untouchable, it's Matthews.
After his performance and effort in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Maple Leafs fans aren't too happy with forward Mitch Marner. He's been the scapegoat on more than a couple of occasions, but when the Maple Leafs need him the most, he doesn't step up and this summer, could find his way out of Toronto.
According to Steve Kouleas of the NHL Network, Mitch Marner is reportedly not against a trade this summer and mentioned the Anaheim Ducks, Nashville Predators and San Jose Sharks.
Kouleas also added that Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares would like to remain with the organization for the 2024-25 season and seeing out the final year of his contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent in July 2025.
If the Maple Leafs decide that they're going to listen to offers or shop Mitch Marner, there will be plenty of suitors. Marner is a solid player and may just need a change of scenery to get going in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The pressure of playing in a big market like Toronto is not for everyone and it's possible that it could be getting to Mitch Marner.
