Murray missed the entire 2023-24 NHL season after undergoing bilateral hip surgery in early October, but was able to return to the ice later on and appeared in three games for the AHL's Toronto Marlies, helping them clinch a berth in the Calder Cup Playoffs.
With Murray's contract set to expire, his future with the Maple Leafs organization was uncertain, but on July 1st the team re-signed the former Stanley Cup champion to a one-year contract worth $875,000.
Recently, Matt Murray was a guest on the Slangin' the Bizkit podcast with Travis Ridgen and detailed his hip issues, along with his recovery from surgery and how he's feeling now.
Murray says that his hips haven't felt this good in a very long time and went on to add that he's been dealing with pain in his hips since he was 20/21 in the American Hockey League with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He said that it was time to get to the root of the problem and figure out what was going on, which led to surgery, giving himself a bit of a reset.
Going into the 2024-25 season, Murray just wants to prove to himself and everyone that he can be healthy and contribute, whether that be in the NHL with the Maple Leafs or back in the American Hockey League with the Toronto Marlies.
When training camp opens in Toronto next month it's going to see interesting to see how much of a look Matt Murray gets when it comes to the Maple Leafs' backup role behind Joseph Woll. He'll be in tough though, with the Maple Leafs bringing in 2024 Stanley Cup champion Anthony Stolarz on a two-year contract earlier this summer.
