Toronto Maple Leafs RFA forward Nick Robertson is still unsigned as training camp approaches in less than a month. Looking at the Leafs depth chart at left wing, there is an increased opportunity for Robertson this season if Toronto GM Brad Treliving can get him inked to a deal.
On TSN 'First Up' this morning, NHL Insider Chris Johnston provided an update on Robertson's situation with the Leafs, indicating there is an increased role for Robertson in Toronto if he truly wants to be here.
Earlier this summer Robertson officially requested a trade after sharing his disappointment in his deployment. The 22 year old, Robertson put up career numbers last season, scoring 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games while only averaging 11:22 in ice time.
The former 2nd round pick from the 2019 NHL Entry Draft has had a rocky start to his NHL career with just 87 games played in parts of 4 seasons. Robertson has dealt with a myriad of injuries but even when inserted in the lineup, he never made the most of his opportunities.
As an RFA, Robertson is limited in his options. He hasn't put up crazy scoring numbers in his career to warrant other teams from offering a lucrative offer sheet his way. Time will tell if Robertson and Toronto can work something out, but the clock is ticking with training camp approaching.
