Dale Hawerchuk became a cultural icon for the city of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Jets after he was drafted first overall by the franchise in 1981. So much so that the city and team erected a statue of his likeness that honours him outside Canada Life Centre.
While many places around the city have been vandalized of late, unfortunately, the piece that honours the late great hockey hall of famer was not immune to this disgusting behaviour according to the Winnipeg Free Press.
While crime has been on the rise across the country and vandalism has seen a steady increase, it's unfortunate that such an important piece of history and a small part of the heritage representing the city, as well as the team, including one of the most iconic hockey players to wear the jets logo, was damaged by individuals who seemingly don't care about ruining others property and the hurt it could cause others.
Hawerchuk dawned the Jets logo until 1990 when he moved on to play for the Buffalo Sabres with stops in St Louis & Philadelphia to finish his illustrious career.
Faced with a cancer diagnosis in 2019, Hawerchuk passed away in August of 2020 after a brief battle. Hawerchuck was arguably the second-best player of the 80's behind only Wayne Gretzky, his contribution to the game will be remembered by those he played with and against and within those organizations he became involved in after his playing career ended.
Whether an owner, manager, or coach, there will never be an individual in the game quite like Dale Hawerchuk.
