The Toronto Maple Leafs have had many struggles throughout recent seasons, one of which has been depth scoring. Nick Robertson could be the answer to the depth, scoring woes but for whatever reason, he was never able to crack the Maple leafs lineup on a regular basis under the previous head coach in Sheldon Keefe.
Now it appears that new head coach Craig Berube has shared his thoughts on Robertson as a player and he's noticed things Sheldon Keefe was never able to see.
According to Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun, Berube has been heaping praise on Robertson after his showing so far in the preseason.
The drama between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson has played out very publicly over the off-season when he notably asked for a trade, but it seems as if the two sides have mended fences and that Robertson will actually get a legitimate shot this year to show that he belongs in the NHL. This is something that he obviously does not take for granted.
Robertson, 23, was played sparingly in the Leafs lineup last season. In just 56 games and very limited minutes, Robertson tallied 27 points including 14 goals and 13 assists.
Although the final roster for the Toronto Maple Leafs is yet to be officially set, it appears that for the first time in his young career, Robertson will make the opening night lineup for the Maple Leafs after a very strong camp.
This might be the best opportunity that Robertson will ever have, and it appears that with a new head coach behind the bench the time for that opportunity is now
