On Monday's Jeff Marek Show, it was mentioned that the Vancouver Canucks had offered Elias Lindholm a seven-year contract worth $7 million per season ($49 million total), which the Swedish forward reportedly turned down.
This is a big development for General Manager Patrik Allvin and the Canucks as it appears Elias Lindholm may be leaning towards hitting the open market on July 1st rather than re-signing with the organization, especially if he's turning down a contract of that size.
The Canucks paid a hefty price to acquire Lindholm from the Calgary Flames which included a first round pick and one of their top prospects, Hunter Brzustewicz, who has been one of the best offensive defencemen in the Ontario Hockey League over the last couple of seasons.
Lindholm, a native of Boden, Sweden, didn't have a great regular season with the Canucks, putting up 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 26 games, but took his game to the next level in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, recording ten points (five goals, five assists) in 13 contests.
There's still 20 days until the free agent market opens, so it's still possible that Allvin and the Canucks could work something out with Elias Lindholm and his camp, but as of right now, it seems like all signs point to him becoming an unrestricted free agent on Canada Day.
