The Nation's Capital held its collective breath on Monday night as Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was forced out of a game against the Utah Hockey Club with a scary-looking knee-on-knee hit.
Those kinds of hits more often than not threaten to keep someone out for a very long period of time and send shockwaves throughout the hockey community.
The hockey world is salivating at Ovechkin closing in on Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal record and very much wishes the legendary forward would return to action soon.
The Capitals organization was cautiously optimistic when it said that Ovechkin's status would be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.
That was all it took for head coach Spencer Carbery to begin pouring cold water on growing anxiety.
In a radio interview, Carbery wishes to reassure the fans that Ovechkin's season is pretty much far from over and that more news about his recovery will be announced soon.
At 39 years young, Ovechkin continues to beat Father Time, and through a very impressive season thus far has placed 25 points, 15 of them goals, and been instrumental in leading the Capitals to the top of the Metropolitan Division.
Still, without Ovechkin, there's a huge hole in the middle of the lineup for the Capitals now, as they're headed into a brutal stretch of games against the Colorado Avalanche, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Tampa Bay Lightning, all good, playoff-hopeful teams.
While fans may want him back as soon as possible, they are also depending on the rest of the roster to rise to the occasion and keep the momentum alive.
The Capitals are banking on a promising start to the 2024-25 season in hopes it will keep them competitive until their captain can return to the fight.
