The NHL right now is full of superstars of the future and intriguing storylines, but above all else in 2024/25 the most intriguing story has been Alex Ovechkin and his red-hot start.
In 18 games played, Ovechkin has 15 goals and 25 points before suffering an injury, and given that incredible start to the year, he now sits just 26 goals behind Wayne Gretzky for No. 1 in goals scored all time.
While Ovechkin has noted that Gretzky has been supportive throughout the whole process, he has now seemingly played mind games with the Washington Capitals captain, making this interesting comment on the chase for NHL history:
Thus far, Ovechkin has shown very little signs of nerves, as he was off to one of the best starts in his career before suffering an injury against the Utah Hockey Club, with many believing without the injury, he would have hit the 42 goals needed to pass Gretzky this season.
After the brutal leg injury, Ovechkin has ramped up his recovery once more, with the new week signalling that he's closer than ever to a return, and if he gets healthy, there's certainly a chance he can make NHL history in 2024/25 with the surprising Washington Capitals.
Ultimately though, even with him getting up there in age at 39, Ovi tallied 31 a season ago and was sitting at just under a goal-per-game through 18 games played, showing that he's still got plenty of gas left in the tank, and if he continues to play the way he has, it's a matter of when, not if he passes Gretzky.
