The San Jose Sharks have just traded their goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood to the Colorado Avalanche, as reported by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

There was a surprising multi-player trade that sent talented goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood to the Colorado Avalanche from the San Jose Sharks, per NHL insider Elliotte Friedman.

This tall, athletic netminder has been known to steal games, flashing brilliance in his early days in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils before joining the Sharks. But then again, injury and inconsistency sometimes got the better of him.

The trade also includes forward Givani Smith and a fifth-round pick in 2027 in the package that speaks to Colorado wanting to firm up their goaltending and get heavier upfront.

MacKenzie Blackwood's addition strengthens the goal partner within the Avalanche tandem, while Givani Smith provides sandpaper and energy into the bottom six of the forwards.

Goaltending has been a question mark with the Colorado Avalanche since the start of the 2024-25 season. For much of the year, they've been trying to just figure out what in the world their problem was.

They just brought in Scott Wedgewood, but it hasn't had the effect they've been looking for. The Avalanche are 29th in the NHL in goals allowed per game with an average of 3.55. This can be a contending team with all of the talent up front if they receive proper goaltending.

Meanwhile, in San Jose, Blackwood is having the best season of his career behind one of the worst defensive teams in the league. He's posted a.910 save percentage and 2.65 goals-against average through 19 starts, both career-highs, after inking a deal with the Sharks last summer.

That leaves Colorado better positioned for a more well-rounded and diverse team to make another run for the Stanley Cup, whereas San Jose is still rebuilding by moving pieces around.

Update: The return package to the San Jose Sharks has been announced and can be seen below.
