As the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils have both improved their teams over the last few years, this close geographic rivalry has begun to heat up. In tonight's matchup in New Jersey, Rangers' captain Jacob Trouba dialled up his physical play and made a statement in the rivalry game.
As the puck came loose to Tomas Nosek in the slot, Trouba stepped in and laid a massive hit while Nosek had his head down.
At this angle, the hit appears clean. It's a massive impact, but still Trouba drives with only his shoulder and doesn't make direct contact with Nosek's head. Additionally, Nosek keeping his head down is the factor that ultimately causes the massive hit to happen.
Tied at a score of 2-2 after the first period, this game is shaping up to be a classic back-and-forth rivalry game.
