Doctor shares Matthews could miss 6 to 9 months after reviewing video
Every year during the NHL playoffs, one player suffers an injury and rather than revealing the details, his team turns to extreme secrecy. This year. That injury was suffered by Austin Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs. After playing in first three games of the series Matthews found himself pulled from the game after the second period of game. 4.
While most teams are secretive about injury information, the Maple Leafs have gone to another level. According to the team, Matthews was initially battling an illness, but they have now claimed it has evolved into something else. Multiple reports have surfaced claiming that his injury could be a concussion while others have even reported pneumonia was keeping him out of the lineup.
After new video surfaced online in the previous couple of days, a doctor has chimed in and provided his take on what could be keeping Matthews out of the lineup.
In my opinion, Auston Matthews probably tore something in his right leg on this play.
I watched his shifts after this play in game 3 and in game 4 and he looked noticeably slower and had much less jump. Tons of torque on the front and inside of the right knee, MCL/LCL tear? Dr. Jesse Morse a Sports & Family Medicine Physician, who describes him self a "an expert in non-surgical treatment of knee, shoulder and hip injuries with regenerative medicine." Chimed in and provided the following insights on the matter:
Looks like the MCL was stressed.
The medial meniscus is attached to the deep fibers of the MCL so technically both could be injured.
If both are compromised sometimes the ACL can get injured too.
They're calling out with an illness' for game 5 & 6 which is strange to me, so there may be more to this knee injury.
When asked if this was a sort of injury that a player could easily play through, You got these Morse provided the following context.
No.
MCL stabilizes inside of knee.
Can wear brace but twisting, pivoting and trying to skate would be severely limiting if MCL / meniscus are compromised
Even grade 1's hurt bad
Morse went onto share that if Matthews has suffered an MCL tear that the likely timeline for his return could be as long as 9 months if the injury were to require surgery.
Minimum 6 months, normallly 9-12 months
@Harjas_Grewal covers hockey injuries for me
At this point every opinion is jury that, an opinion. We likely won't find out what injury Matthews is facing until the Maple Leafs season comes to an end. But for the sake of the Maple Leafs they could really use Matthews for tonight's game 7.
