One of the reasons why NHL owners and general managers hate having their players play at international hockey tournaments is the risk of injury that comes along with it. A major incident was narrowly avoided today as Switzerland took on the host of the 2024 IIHF World Championship, Team Czechia.
New Jersey Devils captain Nico Hischier was driving the net when he went to the ice and collided with Czechia's goaltender, Lukas Dostal of the Anaheim Ducks. During the collision, Hischier was mixed up with two Czech defenders, and took one of their skates to the side of the face in the process.
Nico Hischier will need some repairs after this collision.
A little bit of blood, but he was lucky he didn't get a skate blade to the face. #MensWorlds pic.twitter.com/hOCN4ehR05 Steven Ellis (@SEllisHockey) May 13, 2024
The initial report made it sound much better than it actually was. Hischier had blood dripping down his face, and was extremely lucky it wasn't worse.
Hischier's Switzerland defeated Team Czechia in a shootout. Hischier was not called on to shoot for his country, a pretty good indication he was feeling the effects of the cut.
