14-year-old sets Western Hockey League Record
Gavin McKenna was drafted in the 1st round of the WHL draft by the Medicine Hat Tiger. McKenna was granted exceptional status to the Western Hockey League, and due to his December birthday he is still only 14-years-old. Other players to receive exceptional player status are Conner Bedard and Matthew Savoie.
The 14-year-old is in good company, gaining exceptional status with a 1st round pick and future 1st round pick Bedard. McKenna lit up the scoreboard in his WHL debut, putting up 4 assists against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
For now, McKenna won't be NHL draft eligible until 2026, due to his late birthday but will be a future top 5 pick if he continues to play this way.
