Anaheim Ducks sign last remaining free agent but GM embarrasses himself in the process
Today the Anaheim Ducks announced that they'd finally come to terms with free agent Jamie Drysdale. After holding out all summer the two parties have finally come to a resolution right before the beginning of the season.
🚨 LET'S FLY, JD! 🚨
We've agreed to terms with Jamie Drysdale on a three-year contract extension.
The deal keeps Drysdale in Anaheim for another three years at a reasonable cap hit of $2,300,000 per season.
But after three months of holding out, you have to ask the question was it worth it? Did General Manager Pat Verbeek somehow sign Zegras and Drysdale to team friendly deals?
The answer to those questions are both no. No, it wasn't worth having both players hold out and being out of game shape. The team also didn't end up signing a team friendly deal. Instead the team held out and both players simply signed fair market value deals that force Anaheim back to the negotiations table sooner than later.
So fast forward three years from now and the Ducks will be dealing with more players coming out of entry level contracts and they'll have to go back to the drawing board with two of their most important players. For GMs there are certain battles worth fighting, but for Pat Verbeek this is an embarrassing end to this contract process.
