Brad Treliving gives an awesome quote about the challenges he's faced in Calgary
When the off season started, Brad Treliving and the Calgary Flames had no idea of knowing how quickly things would go bad. After a second round playoff elimination the Flames had all the hope in the world that they'd be able to retain Johnny Gaudreau. They were wrong.
After losing the Oilers it seemed like the Flames had everything in place to be perennial contenders. A Vezina quality goaltender on top of their very promising core. Then the phone call came that Treliving dreaded, Johnny Gaudreau was not willing to sign a deal with Calgary.
Hours into free agency Gaudreau signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets. At the same time Matthew Tkachuk began taking calls from other teams about possibly signing an offer sheet. That's when the next phone call came that derailed Treliving's plans.
After speaking to other teams it was clear to Tkachuk he had no interest in returning to Calgary either. That's when the real off season began for Treliving.
YOU CAN CRAWL INTO THE FETAL POSITION & SUCK YOUR THUMB OR YOU CAN DEAL WITH IT. - WE'RE GONNA DEAL WITH IT!
A WEEK AGO THIS WAS NOT A PLAN THAT WE HAD. WE WERE NOT LOOKING AT MOVING MATTHEW TKACHUK, BUT WE WERE PUT IN A SITUATION WHERE WE HAD TO THE BEST FOR THE ORGANIZATION!
It's good to see Treliving approaching this off season with a positive approach despite the negativity surrounding his club.
