The JT Miller trade rumors are really heating up, and the latest rumors do not come from New York or New Jersey but rather further South.
Reports indicate that the Hurricanes are making a huge move in these so-called "JT Miller Sweepstakes."
This move lines up with the Hurricanes being one of the better Stanley Cup contenders. Their center depth behind Sebastian Aho has been a weakness so far this season, with Martin Necas fitting more into a permanent winger role now.
For now, Jesperi Kotkaniemi (22 points) and Jack Drury (9 points) have been rotating in as a second-line center, a spot that quite obviously needed an upgrade.
Adding Miller could elevate the Hurricanes' lineup, but it all comes down to this: what does Carolina want to give up for him?
One of the most cited names with the Canucks in trade rumors is Kotkaniemi. The former third-overall pick has quite the history with Vancouver, from his injury to rookie Elias Pettersson to the whole ordeal with the offer sheet.
Despite flashes of potential, Kotkaniemi has yet to fully deliver on the promise he once had as a big, two-way center with substantial, untapped upside offensively. At 23, his odds of a breakout are shrinking, but they're not completely gone.
If Vancouver is interested, it's likely due to the fact they still see potential in him. Alone, that likely wouldn't get it done, though, but would have Kotkaniemi as the centerpiece in a deal of this caliber.
Luckily for Carolina, they have an arsenal of draft picks in order to sweeten the deal: all of their first and second-round picks, with an additional third-rounder in the upcoming draft.
The stage is now set, and it becomes a matter of how much Carolina is willing to give up to land Miller.
