The First Round of the playoffs officially came to a close last night with the New Jersey Devils becoming the final team to move onto the second round, eliminating the New York Rangers with a 4-0 win in Game 7.

Eight team have successfully moved on and eight teams failed. The failing eight teams join the rest of the league who are in the midst of their offseason. Management of the eliminated teams will begin dissecting what went wrong with their seasons, if players need to be moved and maybe a coach needs to be replaced.

Speculation has already begun in New York after their game 7 loss. TSN's Darren Dreger reports that longtime NHL coach Joel Quenneville could be a possible replacement behind the bench if the Rangers opt to move on from head coach Gerard Gallant.

Dreger adds that a formal interview request will likely encourage the commissioner's approval.

Quenneville resigned as head coach of the Florida Panthers in the fall of 2021 during the teams' President's Trophy run. The details were revealed on how the Chicago Blackhawks mishandled allegations that a player was sexually abused by an assistant coach in 2010 during the team's run to the Stanley Cup that season. Quenneville was Chicago's head coach when the abuse occurred.

Bettman said last May that Quenneville had not approached him at that time about reinstatement into the league.

«There's nothing currently happening with Joel,» Bettman said. «And if and when there's a real conversation to be had, then I'll focus on it at the time.»

«I assume it'd be initiated by Joel, if and when he thinks it's the appropriate time and he feels that he's ready to come back and there's an opportunity,» he added of the process, «But again, I'll have to make an evaluation at that time.»

It sounds like Quenneville will be back in the NHL soon. You can question his moral sense but that doesn't necessarily lead to wins. Quenneville is all about winning, currently the second-winningest coach in NHL history, with his 969 victories.
